Title: HVAC Drive (VFD) Specialist
LOCATION: Mechanical Sales Midwest – Oklahoma City
JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE:
The HVAC Drive Specialist is responsible for supporting the application, sale, training on and troubleshooting of ABB HVAC VFDs. Mechanical Sales Midwest (Oklahoma City) along with ABB is a market leader in HVAC VFDs and our Drive Specialists are instrumental in maintaining that position.
We are seeking a person who can act not only as subject matter expert on ABB VFDs, but also demonstrate familiarity with other related HVAC equipment and systems. Primary responsibilities include selection and proper application of VFDs, remote & on-site technical/application support, internal support/training of inside/outside sales and technicians, presenting technical content to end-users and specifying engineers, along with working closely with the ABB VFD factory on our market’s needs on current and future products. This position requires the ability to build strong relationships and provide differentiating technical expertise in the market.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following (other duties will be assigned):
- Troubleshooting
- Provide over-the-phone and email-based troubleshooting assistance to end-users, contractors and in-house service team. You are our escalation path, as we want our customers and team calling you instead of relying on factory level phone support.
- Provide onsite troubleshooting assistance when necessary
- Use metering equipment to troubleshoot VFDs, control systems, and other associated equipment related to the proper function of the drive
- Training
- Keep the service team trained and up-to-date on handling traditional VFD start-ups and troubleshooting
- Maintain and provide various trainings to owners & contractors. This content may range from 30 minutes to a full day.
- Develop and support in-house demos for engineer/customer visits to our building
- Sales support
- Assist inside/outside salespeople on identifying the correct VFD for the application
- Review specifications with salespeople
- Perform harmonic calculations, and be able to identify and promote effective mitigation strategies as required
- Identify MRO VFD opportunities with the sales team and support creating a proactive replacement strategy that makes sense for the customer
- Subject matter expert
- Support our local specifying engineers, be known as their subject matter expert for all things VFD
- Participate and be willing to present content at our local ASHRAE chapter meetings
- Be knowledgeable on local rebate programs that help offset the cost of new VFDs
- Participate in local tradeshows
- Be well informed about current industry trends and being able to talk intelligently about the HVAC industry and VFDs
- Speak with knowledge regarding non-ABB VFD products and how ABB’s solution compares
Demonstrate the ability to:
- Display technical knowledge of VFDs, HVAC systems, and protocols (BACnet)
- Implement and support training
- Speak clearly and express self well in groups and in one-on-one conversations
- Test and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems
- Work on electrical equipment, up to 600 VAC, while following safe practices
- Read and understand electrical schematics and one-line diagrams
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in technical field (Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred), or Technical School (Associates degree) training with Electrical or Mechanical focused content, or similar military technical training. At least 3 years of hands-on support of HVAC or similar equipment that involves VFDs. An active electrical license or prior equivalent experience (i.e. military service) is a plus.
