Under supervision of the Laboratory, the Laboratory Phlebotomist-Team Leader performs phlebotomy, appropriate to the position, in compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures. Responsible for all aspects of phlebotomy employing safe, accurate and professional sample collection and processing; computer data entry as required; promptly completes all assigned tasks with accuracy and on schedule; collects, reports and documents patient data related to phlebotomy and communicates effectively with the patient’s RN of changes or needs in regard to phlebotomy collections. The employee can expect to care for patients ranging in age from neonate through geriatric. Under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, assists with phlebotomy collections as well as provides leadership by providing training, feedback, constructive criticism and coaching when warranted. Responsible to assist with oversight of the Laboratory Phlebotomist; coordinate, train and maintain current skills assessment of phlebotomists in basic work flow duties, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of collections, patient identification, specimen labeling, specimen transport, completion of required tasks, equipment maintenance, supplies, reconciliation with documentation for collections. Consistently monitors daily output of each phlebotomist and ensures at least minimal expectations with regard to productivity and quality venipuncture and specimens, to include data collection and reports. Participates in the review process by maintaining notes on individual’s performance throughout the year, providing constructive, fair, effective, unbiased and factual data. Responsible for instrument maintenance, troubleshooting and resolution of problems; maintains inventory of supplies and restocking supplies on carts. Assists and coordinates with nursing and lab staff as needed and requested, subject to Supervisor approval and notification, during low volume times if no other non-phlebotomist duties have been assigned. Must attend/participate in mandatory education programs as defined or directed by hospital and departmental policy. Recognizes their role and participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team working towards Jackson Hospital’s mission, vision, Standards of Performance and goal of meeting all customers’ expectations.

Requirements

High School graduation diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program or equivalent experience; medical/nursing service program which includes phlebotomy will be considered. National Certification as a Phlebotomist required. Minimum two (2) year phlebotomy experience in related work environment Completion of skills assessment checklists. Completion of hospital education requirements relative to position. Mobile Care Phlebotomy (MCP) training. Computer training. Mobile Care equipment, telephone, fax, copier, personal computer and related software; equipment used in performance of phlebotomy. Working knowledge of medical terminology Basic knowledge of good communication skills. Knowledge and proper usage of phlebotomy equipment and techniques. Working knowledge of specimen processing/acceptability procedures. Knowledge of basic infection control practices. Must be able to communicate and work well with others. Strong verbal and customer focused relations skills required. Ability to interact with the public. Ability to form effective working relationships with hospital staff and patients. Must be computer literate and able to perform daily tasks as required. Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to provide solid leadership independently, demonstrating creativity and effective problem solving to overcome departmental obstacles. Ability to ensure excellence in all aspects of the department’s output and to recognize and correct when service levels and resource utilization fall below acceptable levels.

relationships with hospital staff and patients. Visual and hearing acuity. Sensory and communicative activities include feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling and speaking. Verbal communication and hearing ability to communicate with a variety of patients. Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate patient equipment and beds. Requires repetitive movement, fingering, grasping, lifting, reaching, standing and stooping. Ability to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time as workflow dictates; Ability to meet the attendance requirement of the job.
